Abstract

Christian marriage is understood as a sacred covenantal relationship that places God as the primary party in the union of husband and wife. This article aims to examine the theological meaning of Christian marriage as a covenant bond and its relevance in responding to the increasing incidence of marital conflict and divorce in contemporary society. The study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method through the analysis of biblical texts related to marriage and covenant in both the Old and New Testaments, complemented by a critical review of theological literature on Christian family life. The discussion focuses on the covenant concept in the Old and New Testaments, Christ’s relationship with the church as a theological paradigm for marriage, and the ethical and pastoral implications for contemporary Christian families. The findings demonstrate that Christian marriage cannot be reduced to a mere social contract but constitutes a covenantal relationship that demands lifelong commitment, fidelity, holiness, mutuality, intimacy, and exclusivity. It is concluded that a theological understanding of marriage as God’s covenant provides a strategic foundation for strengthening Christian families through premarital formation and pastoral accompaniment within the church, enabling families to grow in spirituality, ministry, and social responsibility amid the challenges of the present age.
